Dinner Meeting Program:

Harry Patsamanis will present on behalf of the Lung Foundation Australia on advocacy and specialist lung cancer nurse teams. 

Harry Patsamanis has over 30 years experience working across the health system with a focus on chronic and complex care. Harry has worked in various health services and not for profit organisations where he led strategic thinking across a number of health areas including mental health, chronic disease, primary care integration and Aboriginal Health. A co-author on 13 peer reviewed publications, Harry has held multiple advisory roles at a state level to inform policy development and state-wide planning. In his current role as a General Manager with Lung Foundation Australia Harry holds the portfolios for primary care education, COPD, Research and consumer programs.


Associate Professor Gavin Wright: Thoracic Surgery Updates: Less is (statistically) best. 

Associate Professor Gavin Wright is an academic thoracic surgeon in the University of Melbourne Department of Surgery, with hospital practice at St Vincent’s Hospital, Royal Melbourne Hospital and Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. He is the Research and Education Lead for Lung Cancer at the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre. He has been a driver of thoracic surgical oncology in Australia for two decades and has contributed heavily to clinical trials and translational research. He is recognised as a pioneer of minimally invasive and robotic thoracic surgery in Australia. Professor Wright completed his PhD in the molecular biology of lung cancer and has research collaborations with multiple Australian and international translational researchers. He has published 150 peer-reviewed papers and has been the recipient of grants and scholarships from Cancer Australia and the NHMRC. In his clinical practice he particularly specializes in lung cancer, thymic and tracheal tumours. His surgical expertise is in complex thoracoscopic lung resections and tracheo-bronchial reconstructions as well as robotic thoracic surgery.



Paula Nelson: Lung Cancer Nurses: Equity in Health Care. Paula Nelson is the Thoracic Liaison Nurse/Lung cancer Nurse at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. She has been in this role for the last 15 years. Before that, Paula worked as intensive care nurse. Paula’s main role is to support patients undergoing thoracic surgery including organising operation dates to pre and post op education. She also supports the many patients with lung cancer who attend the Lung cancer clinic at RMH. Paula is the Victorian representative for the Australian and New Zealand Lung cancer Nurses forum steering committee.
